“The Knight of Xeo” – part 7: “A Dream”

by Brianna G. Harte

It was at this point that I decided that I was in a dream. Doesn’t every child wish they were special and were magical? Maybe it wasn’t magic that the snakes intended to describe, but it certainly sounded like it. Barriers, leading to a young girl’s tower, or in this case, earthen chamber, and figuring out a problem without an adult’s help. What was going to happen next? It was all far too incredible to be real.

Shaking my head, I began to ignore the thoughts of the snakes pulsing toward me. Swirling clouds taking up space were pushed aside, with mental fatigue. My feet gradually stepped toward the bed as I wondered what life was actually like. Was not remembering part of a typical dream? I couldn’t figure that out. The slithering reptiles swarming my legs didn’t aid in concentration. Just ignore them. This is all just a dream.

I began to lay down on the bed with the dangling fruit above it, the scent arousing my senses. How do I wake up? The thought hadn’t occurred to me, but what difference would it have made should I have realized it sooner? Pretending to yawn, I lay my head upon the pillow, forgetting all that was around me, letting my mind drift away.

I jolted upright in an earthen room and immediately fell back down on the pillow in annoyance. Looking up, though, something was different. No peculiar fruit lay above my head. No vines crawling across the earthen walls. Curious, my eyes drifted to the ground. It was completely snake-free.
