“The Knight of Xeo” – part 6: “A Mystery”

by Brianna G. Harte

Think about it. Most people have never paid attention to us, nevertheless spoken to us mere belly crawlers.

“That doesn’t mean I can’t be human. I’m just different,” I proclaimed. “Also, I have nothing better to do.”

We’re honored. There was a pause in thought. Why don’t you do other things? Have you never left this room?

“I’ve never tried. There are no openings of any kind,” I sighed. “So it’s not the fact that I wouldn’t want to in any case.”

Maybe you could dig yourself out of here.

I turned over the fruit in my hands. “Easy for you to say. I bet you could leave right now if you wanted to.”

In a way, yes. But also no. A few rounds of the sun ago, we suddenly couldn’t move beyond certain points in the earth. All of our efforts led to nothing. Well, finding you at the center of this barrier.

As I interpreted the moving essences of thought coming to me from the snakes, I began to realize that it began to feel more second nature. My mind automatically translated for me with less uncertainty in what I believed they were saying.

I folded my arms. “I wonder why. And hey, if you couldn’t leave, wouldn’t you go hungry?”

We snakes only eat once or twice every week, so there has been enough.

But that is not the point.

Yes. Since your location is at the center, perhaps you are the one preventing anything from coming or going. Maybe you can get out of here any time you want and never realized it.

“That’s crazy. . .”
