excerpt #2 of “Our Drier River”

by Brianna G. Harte

“A woman?” General Unyr bellowed as he descended the steps so hard they almost cracked. “Warriors! They expect a woman to do men’s work!” They laughed with him at the thought.

She straightened her back and lifted her chin. “I am Jeveneur, practicing nurse for nine years. All of my training has qualified me to work on even the more serious health problems.”

“Only the most logical, intelligent, and compassionate can become nurses here,” a man in the far back shouted.

“That does not qualify a woman to heal.” General Unyr scanned the crowd. “If you do not choose a male within a minute, your leaders shall die.”

His words shook the crowd, invoking a large rumble from the tied crowd. Mutters from one person to the next rose as they wondered what the risks were.

Excerpt 1 for “Our Drier River” (my NaNoWriMo story)

Excerpt 1 from my original realistic fiction story, “Our Drier River.” I’ll be writing the story throughout November for National Novel Writing Month and more excerpts will be posted throughout the month. Current word count: 1682

Squadrons of fifty filed out of the kingdom of sand, Ikkachet, leaving behind the thick, sand and cement walls taking a stake in the endless mounds of desert. As they strode forward, their chests puffed out and fierce dedication marked their faces. Their hands gripped over the leather handles of their newly sharpened swords, anxious of victory. Each pounding against the sand brought them closer to their goals. A trail of footsteps followed them, though the winds soon erased all evidence. The sun boiled the warrior’s blood. It pushed them forward, giving them strength to march to the city of Erebach. Energy wasted on walking soon returned to them by the sun.

A city formed from mud and held by vines came into view after hours of steady walking, acting triumphant amongst the rolling desert regions not five leagues away. The warriors glared at the lush green grass surrounded the walls, spitting at the ground in utter disgust.

“Team Curion!” General Unyr yelled vigorously from the right, bounding away on the only horse their kingdown could extend. “Hold the southern bridge!”

About my NaNoWriMo story!

Hey everyone!

The clock ticking down to NaNoWriMo says it’s soon! 10 days! Are you all ready?

I’d like to let you know what I’ve been thinking for the story I’ll write for the month. Unlike usual, it’s going to be realistic fiction, and no, it’s not going to transform into or mix with another genre like “Two Red Roses”.  Serious topics shall be explored during this writing process. There will be . . . well, why don’t I tell you a little of what’s in store?

It all starts in Erebach, where life seems rather peaceful by a majestic flowing river, until warriors from a nearby desert region come to claim it all but follow through with far more brute force than the leader of the sands could have imagined . . .
Keep an eye out for posts with “Our Drier River” in the title and in the category “The month of ‘Our Drier River'” for updates and some excerpts of what I’ve been writing once November comes around!

That’s all for now!
