“The Knight of Xeo” – part 1: “Snake from the Abyss”

by Brianna G. Harte

“So. This is where you’ve been hiding,” a deep voice lurked from the dark abyss surrounding me. The cool, lingering words brought the thought of a snake to mind as the source circled me. “Just come out and we’ll leave quietly. There’s nothing for you here anyway, human. Not even those living with you care for you to be around or they would not have put you away like filth.” The snake redefined itself as a boa constrictor, gradually coming in tighter, my lungs clenched along with my breath.. My feet would not move. Even if they could, there was no where to go. “Simply emerge. That is all you need to do.”

I attempted to protest, but no breath could support it. Every bit of air that could enter could scarcely be used for sustaining my life, let alone fighting back.

“We’ll be coming for you sooner or later. Make it difficult and we may have to take. . . certain measures.”

Grasping air proved futile as the muscles of the snake took their final tug at my body.

I jolted awake, sucking in air in a panic. It wasn’t real. It wasn’t real. Shaking my head, images would not fade. The covers were pushed aside as feet swung to dangle over the side of the uncomfortable bed. Something cool, slightly rough, ran across the bottoms of my feet. No. Please no. Biting my lips, I switched the light on.

My scream could be heard for miles.
