Janus’ Trap

by Brianna G. Harte

Standing before two doors

On either side of a windowless room,

The walls vibrate like a heart,

Pressuring a choice to bloom.

Uncertainty on either path,

Janus whispers in my ear,

Tempting me to choose wrong,

And cause my life to disappear.

Will what lies beyond each door

Lead to a calming mind?

Or am I destined for sorrow

Upon a path that I’ll find?

Down one hallway beyond a door,

A window let in the light

Though I’m not sure

If I can call the journey a delight.

The other remains unopened,

Composed of simpler wood

And yet I may hear a song beyond it,

Just from where I stood.

I stand in the middle,

Waiting for the day,

When someone can explain to me

Why I simply couldn’t stay.
